Viticulturist David Dunn, winemaker Roland Kaval and cellar rat Danny Shaw have joined forces to produce a single vineyard Durif, in the traditionally rich, hearty style for which Rutherglen is justifiably famous. A history of phyloxera has served to quarantine the vines and preserve the sacred old rootstock. Rutherglen is fortuitously endowed with the most precious productive parcels of Durif anywhere in the world. The Stanton & Killeen parcels are just three kilometres due west of Rutherglen, on picturesque, gently undulating pastorals. Thirty hectares of the best well drained soils are planted to vine, a mix of gravel ridges and red loam slopes, under which lie auspicious porous clays. It is on these latter soils that the Classic Muscat is grown. Sunning the oaken barrels which hold various vintages, rotation of the stocks through a complicated Solera system, slowly develops the melt in your mouth richness, an artisanal recipe handed down through six generations of Stanton Killeen.

The Morey family celebrate a tradition of winemaking which spans five centuries along the steep banks of Mosel River. Their 2½ hectare vineyard on the outskirts of Beechworth now yields a quality of fruit which would have done the ancestors proud. The Gamay grape traditionally makes a light bodied fruity wine, its thin skin offers little tannin, for a style which drinks superbly on release. Sorrenberg work to a combination of Burgundy and Beaujolais techniques, producing an even more engaging wine through the inclusion of a soupçon Pinot Noir.

Joseph Seppelt was one of many Silesian migrants who fled persecution to settle the new colonies of Australia. Mick was the first family vigneron to be university educated, his legacy endures as Morris of Rutherglen’s flagship red, a true icon of Australian wine. George Francis Morris established a small vineyard in 1859, just two miles east of the current Mia Mia Morris family wineworks. A Rutherglen specialty, Durif is a characteristically big wine, originally imported from Hermitage by Victoria's legendary viticulturalist Francois de Castella circa 1908. Golden Ball pick theirs in three stages, based on perfect timing of each parcel, day by day as the fruit achieves optimal ripeness. The wild vineyard yeasts of early morning harvest, secondary malolactic ferments and extended maturation in the finest Bordeaux coopered oak, complete a wine of extensive breadth, beguiling roundness and ingratiating complexity. A dark tempest of fruit around a core of taffeta coffee oak, tactile flint and brooding tannin briar.

The first parcels of Golden Ball were planted to two choice clones of Burgundian Chardonnay in 1996, husbanded from inception with a view to yielding measured harvests of the most outstanding fruit. Grapes are all hand picked and sorted for excellence, filled to an opulent proportion of new French coopered oak and treated to a wild vineyard yeasts ferment, full malolactic, lees stirring battonage and the luxury of seventeen months maturation. Grapefruits and durian, brûlée and flan, awesome weight of fruit and palate roundness, pursing apple tang and barrel ferment richness.

A half of Cabernet Sauvignon, the balance in Merlot with a judicious measure Malbec, all picked off the original block of Golden Ball vines, separately treated to wild indigenous yeast ferments for retention of varietal eloquence. Components are for rack and returned for malolactic, assembled and filled to an extravagantly high mix of new, Bordeaux coopered French oak for an extended term of eighteen months age. A deeply cryptic Cuvée, defined by savourynes and intensity of opaque fruit, its dark brooding layers unravel as the tannins soften and glow in the glass.
